This week’s question I keep getting is: what’s the best thing to eat post workout?
This might depend on when you workout. If you workout before a large meal, the best thing to do is to make sure that your post workout meal includes healthy carbohydrates and protein. Examples of healthy carbohydrates include sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, or a large amount of leafy greens or vegetables. Examples of healthy proteins include ground turkey, skinless chicken breast, and lean ground beef (80-85% lean or higher). One great post workout meal that I love to make is a rice bowl:
protein of choice (see above list), cooked in a skillet over medium heat. Add a healthy oil such as olive oil.
add vegetables such as spinach, carrots, zucchini, green peppers. Add seasonings (cumin, paprika, ginger, sesame seeds, salt, pepper, etc.)
serve over brown rice
If you’re looking for a good post workout snack, a great go to is Greek yogurt with fruit and honey and oats. Another option would be a nut butter (peanut or almond) and an apple.
Whatever you do, eat something. Your body needs to be refueled after the hard work you’ve done.
