Is CrossFit good for weight loss? This is one of the top questions that I’ve been asked by potential members these last couple of weeks.
As a CrossFitter for the last three years, I believe that it’s the best solution for weight loss, but I realize that my opinion is a little biased.
At the very least, everyone can benefit from additional exercise. Most people know this and realize this already, I believe the big barrier to a lot of people starting lies in the commitment. It’s very easy to start a workout program, but finishing one requires accountability. Accountability may come in many forms. Perhaps it’s a running group, or a Zumba class, or a dog that needs a walk every night. This is where CrossFit delivers, you’re accountable every time you walk through the doors of a CrossFit box. You’re accountable to yourself to do the very best you can, and you’re accountable to the other members in your class to show up and not cut corners.
The other element that CrossFit delivers on lies in modification and scalability. If a runner becomes injured, there is no solution rather than to rest. Injured runners are often told to do one thing: stop running. However, if a CrossFitter becomes injured, either due to a car accident, or overuse sports injuries, everything can be modified. Knee injuries? Squat to a depth that is comfortable, train those muscles that support your knee to aid in recovery. Hip weakness due to sitting too much? Train your core, use whole body movements as seen in a CrossFit workout.
The last element that helps with weight loss? Nutrition. You can spend all day working out in the gym, but if your nutrition choices are off you will erase everything you work for. Proper, clean food choices are paramount to weight loss. That’s why we work with all of our members on basic nutrition choices.
The main thing to extend your life and lead a healthy existence is just to move, get off the couch, go for a walk, ride a bike, run at the park, join a Zumba class, or come join us. One hour a day, 3-5 days a week is all it takes. CrossFit is modifiable to any skill level, scalable to any injury, and activates your metabolism in a way that a walk or time on the treadmill or elliptical just can’t deliver. Are you ready?
